In detail

Teaching assignments in adult education abroad consist of teaching at an adult education institution in Europe or around the world. You will be involved in the preparation of teaching units and the assessment of adult learners. By collaborating with other trainers and learning about other educational practices, you will get inspired and get ideas for your work in Switzerland. You can also invite trainers from the host institution to your institution in Switzerland for teaching assignments. Thus members of staff who do not take on a teaching assignment abroad can also benefit from the exchange.

This activity is funded by the Swiss Programme for Erasmus+. This programme allows Swiss institutions to organise activities similar to the ones funded by the European education programme Erasmus+.

Learning and sharing knowledge

You will benefit on a professional and personal level from a teaching assignment abroad. You will get to know new pedagogical methods and deepen your understanding of the diverse needs of adult learners. You will also exchange ideas with colleagues abroad and gain insights into different educational structures. In addition, you will improve your intercultural skills and establish an international professional network.

Examples:

  • An adult educator from Lucerne teaches a course in intercultural communication in Canada
  • An adult education centre lecturer from the French-speaking part of Switzerland teaches Business French in England for six weeks, while a colleague from England teaches English in Switzerland.
  • A trainer from St. Gallen teaches a workshop on resilience in Germany.

Professional development and team building

A teaching assignment abroad provides participants with the opportunity to make contacts and build an international network. The experience abroad also strengthens your ability to work with people from other cultures and broadens your career prospects. This has a positive impact on the staff of all the adult education institutions involved.

Planning your stay

In order to get the best out of your stay abroad, plan your teaching assignment well in advance and define the subject matter, the country of destination, and the respective language, in which you would like to teach. Look for a suitable partner institution and approach the persons in charge in order to jointly plan your teaching assignment abroad and, if suitable, the teaching assignment of a member of their staff at your institution. In collaboration with your partner institution you draft the content of the courses you teach. Once you return back home you will have broadened your educational methodology, gained new perspectives, and acquired new know-how and international contacts.

Procedure

For participants (outgoing and incoming)

Contact the institution based in Switzerland. They will submit the funding application to us, regardless of whether the project comprises teaching assignments abroad and/or in Switzerland.

For institutions

Essentially, all collaborators can initiate a teaching assignment. The funding application is officially submitted by the institution based in Switzerland.

Teaching assignments in adult education are funded by the Swiss Programme for Erasmus+. In addition to teaching assignments in adult education, this programme also finances Continuing Education and Job Shadowing in adult education. It is possible to combine different types of activities in one funding application.

Follow the following steps to get your project started:

  1. 1

    1. Find a partner institution

To go on a teaching assignment, you need a partner institution.

    • Activate your personal or professional network to find a partner institution.
    • Check out the European platform for adult education professionals EPALE. On EPALE you can either place an advert or contact institutions which have already placed an advert.
    • Teaching assignments in adult education are generally possible worldwide, with a few exceptions. Make sure that the partner institution you have in mind is located in an eligible programme country.
  2. 2

    2. optional Form a consortium

If several Swiss institutions are pursuing the same goal, they can apply for funding for mobilities as a consortium. Find out whether a consortium project brings additional benefit to your project.

  3. 3

    3. optional Preparatory visit

Would you like to meet potential project partners on site to get to know each other or jointly develop a project? Get financial support for a preparatory visit.

  4. 4

    4. Plan project

    • Determine the interest your institution may have in offering teaching assignments and what it hopes to gain from them.
    • Plan the project and the stay abroad in close collaboration with your partner institution.
    • Describe the planned activities in the funding application and provide information on the following points
      • Details of all partner institutions
      • Brief project description with objectives
      • Overview of planned mobility activities
      • Information on the preparation, the on-site support and the follow-up of the mobility activities
      • Planned internal and external communication activities of the project results.
    • Use the award criteria as a guide:
    • It is important to us to also enable persons with disabilities or with physical, mental, or chronic diseases to participate. Therefore, we provide additional funding for persons with special needs, for which you can apply in the funding application. You may also submit a request for funding for special needs at a later stage during the project duration. You can find more information under Inclusion and equal opportunities.
    • Consider environmentally friendly means of transport in the planning of your project. Find out more about green mobility.
    • We are glad to offer individual consultation sessions in case you may have any questions regarding the planning and implementation of the project or the submission of the application. The consultation can take place by phone, online or on site.
  5. 5

    5. Submit funding application

    • Submit the funding application online. Meet the deadlines in March and October.
    • Begin filling in the application as early as possible in order to learn about the requirements. The application forms are activated once the call for projects has been launched, usually in December and June. You can save the work done on the application and continue working on it later. If you submit an application for the first time, you need to register once.
    • Only one application is required for all persons involved in the teaching assignment. You can also apply for funding for continuing education and job shadowing abroad in adult education in the same funding application.
  6. 6

    6. Contract and payout

    • We will review your application once the deadline has expired.
    • You will receive notification at the end of May or the end of November.
    • After a positive decision, we will send you a contract.
    • The project starts on 1 June or 1 December. You can choose between a project duration of 12 or 24 months.
    • Within 30 days of receiving the signed contract, we will pay out the first part of the funding: 80 % of the approved total amount for projects with a project duration of 12 months and 40 % for projects with a project duration of 24 months. As soon as you have used 70 % of this amount, you can claim the next 40 %. We will calculate the remaining amount once the final report has been submitted.
    • Payments are made exclusively to adult education institutions based in Switzerland.
  7. 7

    7. Implement project

    • Prepare the participants for the exchange so that they can benefit as much as possible from the experience.
    • After the start of the project, we invite you to a kick off event. You will receive all the information you need to successfully carry out and complete your project. This event also provides you with the opportunity to get to know your contact persons and other project managers.
    • You can use the notification of requirement for additional funding for persons with special needs to apply for additional funding if you have not already done so in the funding application.
    • Please notify us of any contractually relevant changes to your project (e.g. duration, project partners, budget) with the Request for Amendment of Agreement.
  8. 8

    8. Submit final report

Once the project duration has ended, you submit a short final report within 60 days of the end of the contract. Depending on the number of mobilities realised, we will pay out any remaining amounts or make a reclaim.

  9. 9

    9. Spread the word

    • Implement the planned communication measures. Be sure to mention that the project has been funded by Movetia. We provide the logo and text modules for this.
    • Share the content widely via your institution's channels, e.g. newsletter, social media, blog, etc. Thus, your institution comes across as innovative, open-minded and an attractive employer. You will also stimulate professional exchange in the education sector.
    • Contact us to increase your reach, e.g. by placing a magazine article on our website.

Q & A

Movetia does not stipulate any regulations for substitution measures. You organise your substitution and the timing of the activity in consultation with your institution.

If you are unable to carry out a project as planned, you may try to modify it in alignment with the approved budget. It is important to note that the funding budget cannot be exceeded and that you need to inform us of any changes.

We will be glad to advise you and help you in finding a solution.

Your employer in Switzerland will continue to pay your salary during your stay abroad. As the teaching assignment abroad is regarded as continuing education and not employment, a teaching assignment does not imply any changes on your current employment contract.
