Green Mobility

Travelling is an inevitable part of an exchange experience. For exchanges to be sustainable, every mobility or cooperation project should scrutinise its impact on the environment. Here you can find out how to make travelling as sustainable as possible.

As a national agency for exchange and mobility, we are committed to high-quality education on a daily basis, thereby contributing to one of the 17 goals for sustainable development. Other aspects of sustainability are also important to us, in particular the impact on the environment. Travelling always has a cost in terms of CO2 emissions. However, it is possible to reduce your carbon footprint by being responsible in the way you travel. It is everyone's responsibility - participants, institutions and Movetia - to commit to greener mobility projects.

Would you like to know how energy consumption differs between modes of transport? This mobility calculator allows you to compare the different means of transport, especially in terms of carbon emissions:

Convince participants to travel by train

We recommend that participants travel by train within Europe. As well as being  good for the environment, rail travelcan also have other advantages. Here are a few arguments that you can use to convince even sceptics in a friendly way:

All the positive aspects of travelling by train ...... and what you are spared compared to travelling by aeroplane.
Switch from the platform directly to your seat Several long queues, interpersed with kilometres of walking in huge terminals
Luggage, as much as you can carryOne gram too much and you risk 50 CHF
Time for productive work in the quiet compartment from the very first minute, usually with free WIFI (and a power socket!)

Flight mode on and offand on and off ... and timeand again the obligation to stow the devices under the seat or in a place where you won’t have quick access anymore. Imagine a flight with turbulence!

And anyway: Only if luck is on your side is there a USB port. Free WIFI? Nope

Options for meetings within small groups in the compartment

or simply to visualise all that a stay abroad will offer

Having to contort yourself to speak quietly to the person in the row behind you

The best thing is that you can bring a full drinking bottle without a millilitre limit: nothing stands in the way of a pick-nick and an aperitif Pouring all soaps and drinks into small containers - half of them will spill anyway
Look out of the window, enjoy the scenery and see where the journey takes youOkay, being above the clouds is nice too. Although: in the sky, it looks the same all over
Arrival (mostly) directly in the city centreChange to an expensive taxi or public transport (including an odyssey through the suburbs)

Promotion of environmentally friendly travel as an institution

As a project organiser, you can introduce a green mobility policy. For example, an institution may ask its mobility participants to fly only to destinations outside Europe. Let yourself be inspired by the examples from the field and make a commitment to green mobility.

    Developing greener mobility

How can the number of international mobility opportunities be increased while reducing the resulting environmental footprint? By creating the handy “Greener Mobility best practices: Let’s get inspired!” document, Movetia wanted to examine the issue of more environmentally-friendly mobility in the higher education sphere. This publication presents a number of “green” ideas to be developed at policy level, best practices to be adopted in higher education institutions throughout Switzerland and Europe and considerations to be taken into account by beneficiaries.
