In detail

As a language assistant at a host school, you will gain teaching experience abroad. You will teach your native language German, French or Italian on site. You will get to know the culture and language of the country and make international friends.

Ideal for first teaching practice

The focus of your teaching is on oral language teaching. The aim is to help pupils overcome their linguistic inhibitions, to make language learning fun for them and to provide insights into the culture of your country of origin. You also support the teachers in preparing and teaching their language lessons.

Ideal complementary option for many degree programmes

This exciting work placement abroad offers prospective and less experienced teachers the opportunity to put the teaching methods they have learnt into practice. You can take part in the assistantship programme if your degree programme is related to languages or prepares you for the teaching profession, i.e.

  • You attend a university of teacher education (UTE)
  • You are studying a linguistic subject such as German, Hispanic, English or Romance studies as a major or minor subject
  • Your field of study is German as a foreign language (DaF), Français langue étrangère (FLE), Italiano lingua straniera (Ils) or
  • You attend a teacher training programme at a university, e.g. for STEM subjects.

Other degree programmes of Swiss universities are possible if they are related to the teaching profession.

Partner organisations and host schools in different countries

We have partner organisations in Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, and Spain, which can place you at local host schools. In some countries, language teaching assistants can also work at Swiss schools abroad (currently Spain, Colombia, and Singapore). The conditions of employment vary depending on the host country. When applying you decide on one country of destination. You can indicate your preferences in terms of school level and region in the host country, but there is no guarantee that your wishes can be fulfilled.

Part-time wages, financial support and leisure

The stay abroad lasts between six and twelve months, depending on the country of destination. The workload is between 40% and 60%. You will receive a salary from the local school, which varies depending on the country of destination. You will also receive financial support from us.

Reliable partner organisations

With us and our partner organisations abroad you have reliable organisations by your side during your language teaching assistantship abroad. You will also have a contact person at your host school. In order to prepare you for your assistantship we organise a one-day preparatory seminar in Bern.
