In detail

A traineeship in Switzerland offers pupils at a specialised secondary school the opportunity to gain work experience in another language region of Switzerland by completing their compulsory internship there. Participants spend up to six months on site - alone or in a group. The search for a suitable internship in the desired region is carried out either by the participants themselves or by the specialised secondary school. During the internship, pupils live in the relevant language region and have the opportunity to attend a language course on site.

This funding opportunity is financed by the National Exchange in Vocational Education and Training programme.

Professional internship with a plus

A work placement is a compulsory part of the curriculum at specialised secondary schools. By completing the internship in another language region of Switzerland, pupils increase the benefit of the internship. They not only gain work experience, but also improve their language skills. They also strengthen soft skills such as independence and intercultural competences. With these skills, pupils increase their chances in the labour market.

Options include, for example:

  • A student specialising in healthcare from St. Gallen is completing a six-month internship at the cantonal hospital in Geneva.
  • A social work student from Basel works for 4 weeks in an assisted accommodation centre in Lugano.
  • A student from a vocational secondary school in the field of education in upper Valais is gaining work experience in a primary school in lower Valais during a 6-week internship.

Participants also have the option of attending a language course before or during their stay.

Advantages for specialised middle schools

Secondary specialised schools also benefit from offering internships in other language regions: On the one hand, they benefit from the experience and skills that their pupils acquire during their exchange and bring back to the school, and on the other hand, they increase the attractiveness of their training centre.

Concrete implementation of work placements

Pupils should contact their school if they are interested. As a specialised secondary school, submit a funding application and you will be responsible for implementing the exchange activities. In concrete terms, this means: you look for internship companies, plan the activities, recruit the participants, take care of the learning content and accommodation, accompany the participants during the exchange and take care of the follow-up. If it makes sense, involve the pupils in the planning. We accompany and support you throughout the entire process and help you to network with Swiss educational institutions. Contact us for counselling.
