In detail

A traineeship abroad enables VET students and apprenticeship graduates to practise their profession in another country. Participants work in Europe or elsewhere in the world for up to a year. The Swiss vocational schools, the Swiss professional association or the training provider in Switzerland are responsible for arranging an internship and providing on-site support.

VET students/apprentices acquire important professional and personal skills during their internship abroad. Preparation by the Swiss institution and a voluntary language course on site simplify the start abroad.

Traineeships abroad can be organised individually or in a group. The organising Swiss institution can plan the exchange unilaterally (outgoing) or as a reciprocal exchange between, for example, two training providers or two vocational schools (outgoing and incoming).

This activity is funded by the Swiss Programme for Erasmus+. This programme allows Swiss institutions to organise activities similar to the ones funded by the European education programme Erasmus+.

Progress personally and professionally abroad

VET students/apprentices and apprentices leave their familiar environment for an internship abroad and face new working conditions in another country. The young people build up additional specialist knowledge, create an international network and improve their chances on the labour market.

You learn to understand and apply technical terms and contexts in a foreign language. In addition, a stay abroad strengthens soft skills and self-confidence as well as your own cultural sensitivity. This sheds new light on both your chosen profession and your own home environment.

Procedure of the work placement

VET students/apprentices and apprenticeship graduates express their interest to their vocational school, training provider or other organisations that arrange internships abroad (e.g. cantons, professional associations or other VET stakeholders). The educational institution (project organiser) finds a partner institution abroad to host the VET students/apprentices and graduates or send them to Switzerland. The Swiss project organiser is also responsible for preparing the Traineeship in Switzerland, but can involve the participants in the planning. For example, the young people can look for an internship and accommodation on their own.

Improve your foreign language with a language course

Participants also have the option of attending a language course on site during their stay. If the stay lasts a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 2 months, VET students/apprentices can take a language course for a maximum of 2 weeks before the start of the internship. Funding is available for this.

However, the language preparation must not be longer than the subsequent internship. If the internship lasts longer than 2 months, a maximum of 1 month of language preparation will be financially supported.

Attractive apprenticeship with international flair

The shortage of young talent in many sectors in Switzerland poses major challenges for vocational education and training. With international internship programmes, vocational schools, training providers, professional associations and cantons are increasing the attractiveness of training and promoting young talent.

Internships abroad not only benefit young people, but also bring fresh ideas and perspectives to companies. Here are a few examples:

  • VET student/apprenticeship schools promote the soft skills and language competences of VET students by sending them to Ireland for 4 weeks.
  • Training providers in the IT sector exchange VET students/apprentices with Sweden or the USA for two weeks to give them different perspectives on innovation.
  • Professional organisations in technical or craft fields, such as carpenters or electricians, send their apprentices to Germany for a 6-month internship to learn new craft techniques and secure skilled workers for the industry.

Concrete implementation of work placements

The project organiser, i.e. the educational institution that submits a funding application to us, is responsible for implementing the mobilities. We support the project organiser. In concrete terms, this means that the project sponsor organises the mobilities, selects the participants, plans the learning content and accommodation, accompanies the participants during the exchange and takes care of the follow-up. We help the educational institution with the development of mobility projects and networking with other Swiss educational institutions. Contact us for support.

Would you like to offer international work placements for VET students/apprentices from outside your institution? Movetia offers start-up funding for the establishment of coordination structures, such as cantonal exchange offices.

Q & A

If you have heard of interesting players in your sector abroad, contact them spontaneously. Many internships abroad have already been made possible in this way. Otherwise, get in touch with Movetia.

No, in many countries - especially outside Europe - a work permit is required. It is sometimes time-consuming or very difficult to obtain one. In the UK, for example, it is challenging. VET students/apprentices from Switzerland have to compete with workers from all over the world. Find out about the entry and labour regulations of the destination before carrying out an internship.

Yes, if you have applied for outgoings (from Switzerland to abroad) and incomings (from abroad to Switzerland) in your funding application. A reciprocal exchange is highly desirable. However, the number of incoming students must not exceed the number of outgoing students.

Yes, if your institution has concluded a funding agreement with Movetia, you will receive financial support for each internship you organise. See Funding amounts.

No, individuals are not eligible to apply to Movetia. Only educational institutions receive funding amounts from Movetia. VET students/apprentices and apprenticeship graduates contact an educational institution to apply for a subsidised internship. The organising institution (project sponsor) then pays out the approved funding to you.
